Significant changes are coming to Welsh business recycling and take effect on 6th April 2024.
It will become law for all businesses, charities and public sector organisations to pro-actively sort their waste for recycling.
Llwidraeth Cymru have introduced the measures in the Non-Domestic Premises Recycling Regulations. They aim to improve recycling rates and contribute to a more sustainable future.
What’s changing?
- Mandatory waste separation: All businesses, charities, and public sector bodies in Wales will be required to separate and recycle specific materials. This includes:
- Food waste (for businesses generating over 5kg per week)
- Paper and card
- Glass
- Metal
- Plastic
- Cardboard packaging
- Unsold textiles
- Unsold small electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)
- Restrictions on disposal. Businesses will no longer be able to:
- Send any food waste down the drain.
- Send separately collected recyclables for incineration or landfill.
- Dispose of wood waste in landfill sites.
What do you need to do?
- Review your waste streams: Identify the types of waste your business generates and determine which materials fall under the new regulations.
- Invest in separate bins and containers: You’ll likely need new bins for each designated recyclable material. Consider colour-coded bins or clear signage for easy identification.
- Choose a waste collection service: Find a licensed waste collector who can provide separate collections for your various waste streams. Procure Smart can help you procure great waste collection deals.
- Educate your staff: Train your employees on the new regulations and how to properly segregate waste into the designated bins.
Welsh business recycling compliance benefits:
- Reduced waste disposal costs: Separating recyclables can lead to cost savings on general waste disposal fees.
- Environmental benefits: Increased recycling contributes to a more sustainable future by reducing landfill waste and associated environmental impacts.
- Improved brand image: Demonstrating commitment to environmental responsibility can enhance your brand image and attract customers who value sustainability.
Resources and support:
- The Welsh Government website provides guidance and resources for businesses to comply with the new regulations: https://www.gov.wales/separated-waste-collections-workplaces.
- Procure Smart can support you through the change by understanding your unique business requirements and identifying the most suitable supplier based on their approach to under/overfilling and their collection schedule. Missing the mark on either of these areas will lead to financial penalisation.
