UK’s renewable energy hits record high with solar also setting new records for generation.
Renewable energy generated a record annual percentage (46.4%) of the UK’s electricity in 2023, statistics published by the Government confirmed.
The latest government data shows the rise from 41.5% in 2022 with electricity generated by wind, solar and hydro outstripping fossil fuels for the third time in four years – falling to a record low of 36.7%.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero published the Digest of UK Energy Statistics (DUKES) documenting that this rise is due to the UK producing more wind and solar power and that the share of generation from low carbon sources rose to a record 60.3% in 2023.
Although wind still remains the UK’s biggest source of clean energy (28.1% of the total, up from 24.7% in 2022), solar power generation also reached a record high in the second quarter of this year.
RenewableUK’s Chief Executive Dan McGrail said:
“As these record-breaking figures show, renewables are now the backbone of the UK’s electricity system, keeping the country powered up as we transition away from expensive fossil fuels towards cheap electricity and our net zero goals.
“The less gas we use, the more protection billpayers have against volatile gas prices, so every clean energy project takes us a step closer to energy independence and real security.”
