Solar generated 14.4% of the UK’s electricity in July 2026, smashing the previous record of 12.4% set only in May 2026. In July 2025 (the best year for solar generation to date), solar accounted for just 9.6% of electricity.
Kisha Couchman, Deputy Director of Policy (Investment) at Energy UK, said: “The news that solar generated a record amount of electricity last month is a positive milestone and a clear sign that people and businesses can see the benefits of investing in clean power.
“As we continue to add more low-carbon power, we need to ensure the rest of the system keeps pace. That means investing in networks needed to transport electricity where it’s needed, alongside storage and flexible technologies that can balance the system, making better use of low-carbon generation and maintaining reliability.
“Together, these investments will improve energy security, support economic growth and help to protect households and businesses from the impact of volatile international energy prices.”
More than one solar installation was installed every two minutes in the first half of 2026. A total of 142,536 solar arrays were installed in the first six months of 2026, more than any other six-month period in the post-subsidy era. (DESNZ, 2026)
